CNM Students Take Top Honors at National Competition
Central New Mexico Community College students took home honors from the national SkillsUSA competition in Kansas City, Mo. while competing against thousands of other students. CNM students earned two gold medals, nine silver, one bronze and seven top 10 finishes at the largest showcase of career and technical education students in the country.
These students earned an invitation to the national competition by earning gold in the New Mexico competition held in April at CNM. The students who placed at nationals are:
Gold Medalists:
Tomomi Miller - Commercial Baking
David Jacobs - Geospatial Technology
Silver Medalists:
Eric Arellano - Prepared Speech
Thomas Elliot - Geospatial Technology
Outstanding Chapter (team event) - including: Megan Horton, John Phelps, Miguel Rivera, Thomas Bateman, Jennifer Stone, Sharla Ayze and Amanda Salazar
Bronze Medalist:
Darryl Del Frate - Geospatial Technology
Top Ten National Finalists:
Jeffrey Simpson - Geospatial Technology (5th)
Cory Matthews - HVAC and Refrigeration (9th)
David Fuentes - Job Interview (6th)
Susan Linnenbrink - 3-D Visualization and Animation (10th)
Chris Castro - Culinary Arts (7th)
David Lazcano - Plumbing (8th)
Sam Lockwood IV - Residential Wiring (8th) (High School Dual Credit Student)
The competition was part of the annual national Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships. The SkillsUSA Championships is considered the largest single day corporate volunteerism event in American and is valued at $30 million in industry support of donated time, equipment, cash and material. All contests are run and judged by industry professionals using industry standards.
