Databases : Online collections of articles which are purchased by the CNM Libraries; most of the articles come from print magazines and journals. You can trust that the information you find there is probably reliable, because it has already been evaluated by editors and publishers. This makes your research go faster, and helps you end up with better results.
Start with the databases when you have a topic you'd like to research by subject or keywords.
Note: Off-campus, you need passwords to access the databases. It will take a day or two to receive the passwords by email; if you need them sooner than that, request the passwords in person or call the reference desks at 224-3284 or 224-5730. |
| Electronic Periodicals : Here is another way of finding articles in the databases, but from a different angle. Start with the periodical search when you know what specific magazine, journal, or newspaper title you'd like to find, or want to see what periodical titles we have in various subject areas. It's a way to quickly determine if any of our databases have full-text coverage of particular periodical titles. |
E-reserves : Unlike the resources listed above, e-reserves are only available for some classes. The libraries post articles, quizzes, notes, and other course materials for instructors who request that this information be made available online for their students.
Note: E-reserves are password-protected, and only the instructors know the passwords for their classes. |
| Free Internet : Finally, a note about online information not specifically provided by the CNM Libraries. The free internet, which is what you're using when you use Google or other search engines, contains information of all types and qualities. While some websites offer good, valid, high-quality information, some websites offer biased, invalid, or misleading information. Either way, you as the researcher have to make the decision whether or not to trust what each page says. For advice on how to do this, try our guide to evaluating resources. |
