CNM, Albuquerque Public Schools and the University of New Mexico signed a landmark Memorandum of Agreement on Friday (Aug. 29) aimed at improving the public education system in Albuquerque and creating a more seamless educational experience that will lead to more opportunities and more success for students at all levels.
Considered to be a groundbreaking agreement on a national scale between a public K-12 school district, a community college and a university, this forward-looking agreement has set a new standard for educational collaboration in New Mexico.
“This agreement is about building more bridges between our educational organizations that will advance the quality and accessibility of education for all students,” Winograd said. “Through this agreement, APS, CNM and UNM are banding together to improve our public education system and provide more opportunities for educational and career success.”
Some of the joint initiatives in the MOA include:
Expanding dual-credit programs to provide students the opportunity to easily enroll at both APS and CNM, APS and UNM, and CNM and UNM.
Developing partnerships for expanding Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language and college preparation programs to ensure student preparation and readiness for higher education.
Create and strengthen articulation agreements to ensure that students will be able to transfer seamlessly from APS to both CNM and UNM, and between CNM and UNM.
Share appropriate data to improve and coordinate policy decisions and support student success.
Develop a collective education information hotline for families and students that will provide information concerning APS, CNM and UNM.
Provide more professional development opportunities for APS leaders and teachers by using CNM and UNM resources.
Explore innovative opportunities for joint cost-saving initiatives and jointly seek grants that could benefit all three organizations.
Share and coordinate emergency and/or crisis planning.
Move toward academic calendars that provide more convenience for families involved with APS, CNM and UNM.
Hold joint Board meetings on topics of common interest.
Schedule monthly meetings among APS, CNM and UNM leaders to discuss and plan for initiatives that will improve education in Albuquerque.
