Class registration will be based on your TABE exam scores.

New Adult Basic Education (ABE) students must complete the HSE Virtual Orientation or the Orientación virtual de HSE before scheduling TABE tests. 

New English as a Second Language (ESL) students must complete the ESL Virtual Orientation or the Orientación virtual de ESL before scheduling TABE tests.

TABE tests are offered in-person at Main, Montoya, and Westside Campuses or can be taken remotely online from your home computer.

High School Equivalency (HSE) Testing 

There are three TABE tests for HSE: Reading, Language Arts, and Math.

HSE students must take the TABE Reading test and the TABE Language Arts test to be registered for language arts courses.

HSE students must take the TABE Reading test and the TABE Math test to be registered for math courses.

For language arts and math registration, HSE students need to take all three tests. 

English as a Second Language (ESL) Testing

There are two TABE CLAS-E tests for ESL: CLAS-E Reading and CLAS-E Listening.

ESL students must take both exams to be registered for ESL classes. Locator tests must be taken to establish specific CLAS-E Reading and CLAS-E Listening tests to be administered. 

In-Person Testing Rules

  • Bring your photo ID.
  • Before arriving, please check on parking information for the campus you are testing at and Assessment office locations.
  • Textbooks, notebooks, dictionaries, calculators, and paper are not allowed in the testing area.
  • Children and other visitors are not allowed in the testing area.
  • Anyone who gives or receives help during the tests or uses notes or books of any kind will not be allowed to continue the test.
  • CNM may cancel test scores if there is reason to question their validity.
