Grants

Information about federal grants, state grants and grant payments.

Federal Grants

Unlike loans, grants are not repaid unless, for example, you are awarded funds incorrectly or you withdraw from school prior to the planned end of the term. All federal grants are awarded to students with financial need.

There are two types of federal student aid grants offered by CNM:

The amount of your Federal Pell Grant depends on your cost of attendance, expected family contribution, enrollment status (full or part-time) and whether you attend for a full academic year or less. To receive an FSEOG, you must first be eligible and receive a Federal Pell Grant. The amount of your FSEOG depends on your financial need.

Federal Pell Grants

All Pell Grant applicants must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Requirements

Pell Grants are generally awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or graduate degree from a nationally recognized or foreign educational institution.

In limited cases, however, Pell Grants are awarded to students with BA degrees who have been accepted into the Alternative Teacher Licensure Program at CNM. Among other requirements, only students with BA degrees can declare Alternative Teacher Licensure as a major. For more information about the Alternative Teacher Licensure Program at CNM, contact the School of Liberal Arts.

Eligibility is based on enrollment status and the calculated Expected Family Contribution (EFC) based on the information provided on the FAFSA. Students must be enrolled in eligible courses and in an eligible program. For a list of ineligible courses and programs, see our General Requirements web page.

Students may not receive Pell Grant awards from more than one school during the same term.

Awards

Pell Grants are the foundation of federal student financial aid, to which aid from other federal and nonfederal sources might be added. Grant amounts can change yearly.

If you're eligible for a Pell Grant, you will receive the full amount you qualify for. The amount of other student aid you might qualify for does not affect the amount of your Pell Grant.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

Requirements

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity (FSEOG) is awarded to undergraduate students with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of '0'. Federal Pell Grant recipients receive priority for FSEOG awards and are automatically considered for the grant.

FSEOG recipients must not have earned a bachelor's degree and must be enrolled in eligible courses in an eligible program of study.

Awards

The amount awarded to a student is based on the availability of funds and is prorated based on a student's enrollment. At CNM, the maximum award is $600 per year and is generally awarded during the Fall and Spring terms.

Due to limited funding, these funds are awarded on a first come, first serve basis. It is important to apply early because of limited funds.

State Grants

Student Incentive Grant (SSIG)

This grant is awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Students with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC) are automatically considered for the grant.

Requirements
  • An EFC between 0 and 3,000
  • Must not have earned a bachelor’s degree
  • Must be enrolled at least half time (6 credit hours and above)
  • Must be enrolled in eligible courses in an eligible program of study
  • Must be a resident of New Mexico
Awards

Awards are based on the availability of funds and prorated based on a student's enrollment. The maximum award is $1,000 per year and is generally awarded in Fall and Spring terms.

Due to limited funds, it is important to apply early to be considered for these funds. Not everyone who qualifies for an SSIG might get one.
