A Full 180: How this Student Went From Managing Restaurants to Studying Machine Tool Technology
Sometimes you just need a change.
That was the case for Rhonda Marin who had built a long and successful career in the restaurant industry, but was now burnt out. Luckily her husband owns and operates Marin Manufacturing, a machine shop in the South Valley, and he encouraged her to go back to school at CNM so she could help run the business.
“I would help out in the shop from time to time, but I was never quite sure what customers were asking me,” she says. “When I was ready for a career change my husband was the first to suggest I go back to school to learn about machining, and I jumped in headfirst.”
In CNM’s Machine Tool Technology program Rhonda is learning essential topics like blueprint reading, metallurgy, CAD/CAM software, CNC machine operation, and advanced manufacturing processes.
Even though Rhonda didn’t have a strong background in machining or manufacturing, she’s been able to excel in her classes and enjoys the variety of skills she’s learning.
“Every day is different, and I’m always excited to see what we’ll be covering in class,” she says. “I’ve also enjoyed working with the young people in my classes because they’re always so willing to help me if I don’t understand something.”
Rhonda was originally going to complete the Basic Machine Tool Skills certificate program, but after her first term she decided to go for the full Machine Tool Technology associate degree. After she graduates, Rhonda’s husband Carlos is going to complete the program as well.
“Carlos is an engineer by trade, so he’s taught himself a lot about the industry already,” she explains. “But I’ve learned so much from the program and I know that he would benefit from learning from the experts at CNM, too.”
Rhonda’s biggest takeaway from the entire experience is that it’s never too late to change paths or pursue another interest.
“I never anticipated going back to school, but I’ve had so much fun since enrolling,” she says. “I’m here to say that age shouldn’t stop you, so if there’s something you want to learn about, just go for it!”
