Blazing Her Own Trail: Meet the First Woman in CNM’s Mechatronics Program

Madelene Ciccarelli used the foundational knowledge she learned while participating in robotics competitions to successfully transition to studying mechatronics

Madelene Ciccarelli’s interest in machines started with the smell of cereal.

Her elementary school was down the street from a General Mills factory and she was always curious about how all the wonderful smelling cereal was made. Flash forward and today, thanks to CNM’s Mechatronics (Industrial Automation Technology) program, she’s learning how to troubleshoot and fix machines just like the ones at that cereal plant.

“The Mechatronics program combines all the things I’m interested in like robotics, working with tools, and fixing machines. I knew right away this was the path for me,” she says.

In her two terms at CNM, Madelene has learned about everything from programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to pneumatics and hydraulics. She loves that every day presents a new challenge.

Madelene also came in with a strong understanding of robotics, which is another key component of mechatronics.

“I competed in robotics for almost 10 years, so it gave me a leg up in the program,” she says. “Along with the technical skills I gained, my robotics background also gave me troubleshooting and problem-solving skills that I use almost every day in class.”

After she graduates, Madelene knows it will be easy to find an engaging job because there are so many opportunities available in mechatronics both in New Mexico and across the country. She also hopes her career path helps encourage other women to pursue mechatronics and STEM.

“There is still a big gap when it comes to women in STEM fields, especially mechatronics,” Madelene explains. “My ultimate goal is to continue to excel in the field and eventually become a mentor to other women interested in mechatronics and robotics. There are very few female mentors in this industry, and I want to help build a structure and network for the next generation.”

Interested in a career in mechatronics or another skilled trade? Come to the New Mexico Women in Trades Summit on March 29! The event is free, but registration is encouraged.
