Building Tomorrow: How CNM Helped This Student Break into the Architecture Industry
Phillip Smith first found computer-aided design (CAD) back in high school when he set out to design the perfect house for his family. Architecture was his passion and his expected career.
But then life got in the way as it sometimes does. Phillip, however, never gave up the dream and just recently enrolled in CNM’s Architectural/Engineering Drafting Technology program to forge his path forward.
“I’ve had a passion for architectural drafting since I was young, but I’ve had to put my education on pause several times over the years,” Phillip says. “I’m so blessed to be able to give it another go and finally study what I love.”
In the Architectural/Engineering Drafting Technology (ARDR) program students learn how to use drafting software as well as the principles of architectural/engineering graphic conventions and the theory and practice of construction technology.
Even though Phillip hadn’t formally studied drafting for a long time, he quickly found his footing.
“Over the years I had continued to work in CAD to keep my skills sharp, but the industry had changed so much since I was first studying drafting,” Phillip says. “I’ve loved learning about all of the new software that makes drafting easier and more efficient.”
Along with his technical courses, Phillip took a Professional Practice course which helps students understand career options and connects them to local firms and professionals. That’s where he learned about Bridgers & Paxton, a well-known engineering firm, where he recently landed a job as a technology drafter.
In this role, Phillip is responsible for planning where electrical wiring, HVAC, and other building functions will go into a new building.
“I’m so thankful for this opportunity, and I wouldn’t be here without the help of CNM” he says. “Even though I didn’t have professional experience, I was still able to come in with industry-level knowledge and experience.”
Phillip has only been working for about a month but knows he’s found his dream career and hopes he can continue to grow at Bridgers & Paxton after he graduates.
“It’s taken me a long time to get here, but I’ll be the first to tell you to never give up on something you’re passionate about,” Phillip says.
