CNM Electric Lineworker Graduate Competes at International Linemen’s Rodeo
Gabe Marquez, a graduate of CNM Ingenuity’s Electric Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship Program, is always up for a challenge.
Case in point: he just participated in the prestigious International Lineman’s Rodeo in Overland Park, Kansas, where he went up against some of the world’s most talented lineworkers.
“We had a competition through my apprenticeship at the New Mexico chapter of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and I was one of the fastest climbers in the group, so I was chosen to compete at the Rodeo,” Gabe says. “It was a cool opportunity to compete and connect with other lineworkers just like me.”
During the three-day Rodeo Journeyman lineworkers and apprentice lineworkers compete in four different competitions including the pole climb and hurtman rescue, along with two mystery events. The apprentices also complete a written exam testing their knowledge of “The Lineman’s & Cableman’s Handbook.” As a first-time competitor Gabe wasn’t sure what to expect but it didn’t take him long to hit his stride.
“Leading up to the competition I was really nervous,” he says. “Once I got there, all my nerves went away. I was just so grateful to be there competing against other people in the field.”
Along with the competition, Gabe also attended the Industry Exhibition which brings together utility lineworkers, foremen, superintendents, training, safety, and management personnel from across the world.
“Competing was fun, but my favorite part was meeting with people at the expo,” Gabe says. “I loved having the opportunity to talk to people with such varying experiences and to hear about what’s happening in different states and even countries. It was really eye-opening.”
With his first competition under his belt, Gabe’s already looking forward to next year.
“I definitely want to compete again next year, and I feel more confident now that I have some experience,” he says. “I only plan on doing better the next time around.”
