CNM South Valley Food Pantry Unveils New Mural

The mural was painted by two South Valley Preparatory students and depicts the importance of agriculture and community

The team at CNM’s South Valley food pantry knew the space needed a coat of fresh paint. But instead of just rolling the walls they decided a mural is what the space deserved.

To create that mural they teamed up with Tatyana Trujillo, a teacher at South Valley Preparatory School, and her two students Mia Tafoya and Gabby Gonzales, to plan and paint a mural that covers two entire walls.

The completed mural had its official unveiling last week during the first pantry distribution of the Fall Term as CNM students came by to pick up bags full of both fresh and non-perishable food items.

“This project is something we’ve wanted to do for a while now,” says Sandra Vazquez, CNM Associate Director of Student Life. “We felt like a mural would make the space more inviting and help speak to the importance of food and where it comes from. Tatyana from South Valley Preparatory and her students Gabby and Mia did a great job of bringing our vision to life.”

The brightly colored mural showcases several aspects of the agricultural industry from people working in the fields to pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies.
