CNM’s Department of Theatre and Dance to Perform “EVERYBODY” From March 20-30
CNM’s Department of Theatre and Dance is excited to host the play “EVERYBODY” from March 20-30 in the Coal Avenue Theater on Main Campus. We recently caught up with Amy Yourd, a CNM theatre instructor and the director of “EVERYBODY” to learn more about the production and what the audience can expect.
Q: What is the history of “EVERYBODY” and why did you choose it for the Spring production?
A: I’m a huge fan of this adaptation by playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. It was originally written in 2017 so it’s very contemporary compared to the original “Everyman” that it’s based on, which is nearly 500 years old. I love the way this script examines modern life while exploring the ageless theme of death. The play also provides some excellent challenges for young actors to tackle.
Q: What is the play about and what can the audience expect?
A: The play is about a character named Everybody who is chosen by Death to give a presentation about their life and how they lived it. Afraid of dying and anxious about this assignment, Everybody searches for someone to accompany them on the journey to the afterlife. It’s a play with a lot of humor about some difficult topics, such as death, and I think it’s a great blend of comedy and drama. The play has some foul language and scarier moments, so it’s not appropriate for small children.
Q: How many CNM students are in the production? Will they be singing, monologuing, dancing, etc.?
A: The production has a fantastic cast of 13 CNM students. The play is portrayed through a mix of scenes, monologues, and dance. Our production team also includes three student stage managers, a student costume designer, and costumes built by the Theatre Department’s Intermediate Costuming class.
Q: What are you most looking forward to with the production of “EVERYBODY?”
A: I’m looking forward to seeing the team’s work come together in the performances! Our costumers, stage managers, and actors have created some extraordinary and magical work for the show, and I can’t wait to see them fully combined.
