Passing the Torch: How This CNM Employee is Carrying on Her Mom’s Legacy
When Michelle Gutierrez started working part-time as a CNM student back in 1993, she had no idea it would turn into a lifelong career path. She also didn’t anticipate having the unique opportunity of working alongside her daughter, Valerie Gutierrez, and eventually watching her take over her role as Student Activities Events Manager.
“I never dreamed the part-time job I took at CNM straight out of high school would turn into a long and fulfilling career in higher education, but it’s been such a blessing,” Michelle says. “My children grew up at CNM, my husband and I both graduated from CNM, and of course now I am so proud to retire from CNM knowing that my daughter, Val, is taking over for me.”
Before she worked in Student Activities, Michelle held several positions across the College including test administrator, testing supervisor, and executive assistant. Valerie also worked in several departments including CNM’s Contact Center and the Assessment Center.
Valerie started as an Administrative Technical Assistant for Student Activities in 2021, and Michelle joined the department as the Events Manager shortly after. Since then, Valerie and Michelle have worked side-by-side to help plan and execute some of CNM’s largest annual events including College Day, Grad Fest, and Graduation.
Both Valerie and Michelle will be the first to say it took a while to get used to working together, but it wasn’t long before they struck a good balance.
“There were definitely times where it felt hard to work together, but we also knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses, so we were able to develop a great working relationship,” Valerie says. “I learned so much from my mom, and I’d like to think she learned some things from me along the way, too.”
After 30 years of service, Michelle retired from CNM this summer, creating the perfect opportunity for Valerie to carry on her mom’s legacy. Valerie officially started as the Events Manager in early June and has transitioned into the role seamlessly.
“I know I have big shoes to fill, but I’m ready to continue my mom’s work while adding my own flair to the position,” Valerie says. “I’m also excited to see how this role grows and changes with the College as we work to keep meeting student needs in new and innovative ways.”
As Michelle reflects on her career journey, she’s thrilled to see her daughter tackle this next chapter in her life and would encourage others to consider pursuing a career at CNM.
“I’m so proud of Valerie and know that I’m leaving my team in incredibly capable hands,” she says. “I am also so grateful for my career at CNM; it truly changed my life and led to me and my family finding a wonderful community. I couldn’t recommend working at CNM more.”
