The Art of Writing a Good Resume
We know the job search process can be daunting. That’s why CNM’s Office of Career and Job Placement is available to help students with everything from resume and cover letter writing to networking and interview skills. This Thursday, July 7, the office will be holding a virtual Resume Writing Workshop starting at 5:30 p.m.
“Some students come into the workshop and they might not have a resume at all. Others might have a resume but need help getting it polished. We’re here to help with whatever you need,” says Stacey Cooley, the Director of the Office of Career and Job Placement.
At the workshop, students will learn how to organize their resumes, highlight their academic experience, and tailor their resumes for specific positions. Typically, the workshops are held at least once per semester, but faculty members can also request to have the workshop brought to their class.
“It’s a great opportunity for all students, but we’re specifically targeting our recent graduates and soon-to-be graduates just in case they still need a resume or need some additional help,” Stacey says.
About 20-30 students are expected to participate in the workshop. According to Stacey, they’ve actually seen a big increase in attendance since moving to a virtual format during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“When the pandemic hit, like everybody else we switched to doing virtual events and they actually turned out to be a big hit with students,” she says.
Although students are not required to bring anything to the workshop, Stacey advises that they come ready to learn and take notes.
“Even though the presentation is virtual, we do have moderators so that you can ask questions in the chat and we’re able to provide additional resources in real-time,” Stacey says.
In-person and online appointments are available for students who would like to meet one-on-one with a Career Coach in order to get more personalized help. In addition, the Office of Career and Job Placement offers plenty of helpful resources for students via their website including a resume writing worksheet, cover letter tips, and HireCNM – an exclusive job board for CNM students.
The Office of Career and Job Placement will also be hosting a CNM Job Match Hiring Event on Thursday, July 14. The event will take place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. inside the Smith Brasher Hall Lobby on CNM’s Main Campus. Over 20 employers from Albuquerque and the surrounding areas will be there looking for candidates to fill positions in a variety of fields including patient care, maintenance, IT, and food service.
Stacey’s hope is that students interested in attending next month’s Hiring Event will take advantage of the Resume Writing Workshop first so that they’re prepared to meet potential employers.
“We really care about our students’ success even after graduation and want to help them find a career they love,” Stacey says.
