This CNM Student is Already Making a Name for Herself in Albuquerque’s Art Scene
Ramona Vigil, who’s only 19, had a budding art career but knew she also wanted a college degree. She was worried about balancing those two things, but then she came across CNM.
“CNM has been the perfect fit for me because of the flexible scheduling options,” she says. “I’ve been able to actively pursue my art career while still working towards my associate degree. It’s been such a great blend of work and school.”
Ramona enrolled in CNM’s Liberal Arts program where students complete the first two years of college transfer work to prepare for a four-year university. Even though she’s attending CNM entirely online, Ramona quickly found community and connection with her instructors.
“When I thought of college, I never thought I would be able to talk to my instructors so often, much less have instructors who care so much about my success,” she says. “My instructors are so caring and thoughtful, and I’m very grateful to have that kind of support.”
In addition to her coursework, Ramona has three different internships. She does promotional work for iHeartRadio, is learning the movie business at Vault Studios and Netflix, and just started an apprenticeship under Frederico Vigil, a well-known fresco artist.
Fresco is an ancient technique where paint is placed on wet plaster, resulting in a very durable mural. As the apprentice, Ramona is using this technique to create a two-floor mural at the Albuquerque Convention Center that depicts the history of wine in New Mexico.
Ramona says she’s already fallen in love with this style of art.
“I knew nothing about fresco art when I applied to the apprenticeship, and now I want to become a fresco artist,” she says. “I love working in this style, and I’m very thankful to have this opportunity so early on in my art career.”
Looking forward, Ramona wants to attend art school after graduating from CNM and plans to pursue a career as a fresco painter, with a career in radio as a back-up. Her best piece of advice for others just starting their college education or a career is to not be afraid of the unknown.
“There are so many great opportunities that come just by putting yourself out there,” she says.
