In CNM's Cosmetology program, you’ll learn essential skills that meet the standards set by the New Mexico State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. This program requires 68-69 credit hours, blending cosmetology and general education, which goes beyond the minimum of 1,600 clock hours required by the State Board.
Our curriculum, based on Pivot Point International, covers both theory and hands-on lab work and focuses on key areas required by the State Board, including:
- Sterilization and Bacteriology
- Shampoo and Rinses
- Scalp Treatments
- Chemical Rearranging for Perms and Relaxers
- Hair Styling, Coloring, and Cutting
- Facials and Pedicures
- Salon Business and Retail Sales
You have the opportunity to practice many of these skills under the supervision of licensed instructors in CNM's Suncat Salon, which offers a variety of cosmetology services to the CNM community, including hair, nail, and facial treatments.
Path to Licensure
Upon completing CNM's Cosmetology program, you’ll be eligible to earn licensure after passing the state exam through the New Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. Keep in mind that the first-term courses are only available in the fall and spring terms, which could affect your start date. Be sure to check with CNM Advisement for more details.
