The Electrical Trades program at CNM prepares you for a variety of roles in the electrical trades industry. Through hands-on training in electrical circuitry, troubleshooting, and adherence to local and national electrical codes, you’ll gain the skills necessary to pursue a variety of certificates and degrees in this field, including an Electrical Trades certificate or an Associate of Applied Science degree.
This trades program is designed to be completed in just over one year, with an estimated cost of approximately $8,129, not including living expenses. New Mexico does not have licensure requirements for this profession, making it an ideal time to enter the workforce.
Curriculum Highlights
- First Term: You will begin with foundational training in personal and tool safety, meter reading, and electrical circuitry. You'll learn essential electrical formulas, calculations, and material identification, alongside hands-on experience with AC/DC motor operation and troubleshooting.
- Second Term: Building on your first-term knowledge, you'll dive into residential blueprint reading and the application of the National Electrical Code (NEC), New Mexico Electrical Code (NMEC), and local codes. This term focuses on installing branch circuits and feeders, residential services, and various switch circuits, as well as door chime installations and conduit bending.
- Third Term: In your final term, you will refine your technical skills in power distribution systems and three-phase services. You'll gain expertise in commercial blueprint reading, circuitry, three-phase motor starters, and timers. Additionally, you’ll learn advanced skills in mechanical and hydraulic conduit bending, cable installation, and the safe operation of tools like power threaders and hammer drills.
With on-the-job training offered in courses like ELTR 1220 Residential Wiring Lab and ELTR 2692 PV Installation Lab, you’ll be well-prepared to make your mark in the electrical trades industry.
