English as a Second Language (ESL)

You can take classes with CNM's ESL (English as a Second Language) program if you are a non-native speaker of English. The program serves students from all over the world.

We offer classes at the High Beginning, Low Intermediate, High Intermediate, and Low Advanced levels.

The ESL Virtual Orientation provides important information and will help you decide if the ESL program is appropriate for you.

  • Classes are numbered 101-106, 201-206, 301-306, and 401-406.
  • You will be offered a class that matches your TABE CLAS-E test score.

If you place too high for the ESL program, you can take TABE Reading and/or Math tests to register for HSE preparation classes, or take the Accuplacer test in the Assessment Center to register for college-level classes for ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages).

Career Pathways

Nursing Assistant

Central New Mexico Community College offers a certificate program for Adult Basic Education (ABE) students who wish to prepare for working in health care. The program is open to speakers of any language. The instruction is in English. The program is open to qualified Advanced ESL students with test scores 221 (Advanced) or above. The ability to work legally in the U.S. depends on immigration and visa status. Visit USCIS.gov for more information.

Spanish Bilingual Program

If you are interested in CNM's Spanish bilingual program in Early Childhood Multicultural Education, contact Elma Garcia at [email protected] or call (505) 224-4000 ext. 54134. The program is open to ESL students with test scores of 181-235. 

A student can register for classes after an orientation has been completed and the ESL placement test has been taken. We offer leveled classes and multi-level classes. Classes are offered in person and online.

ESL Conversation Group

We offer ESL conversation groups for anyone wanting to improve their English speaking!

Individual Tutoring

Individual tutoring is available for current ABE students. Please contact The Learning and Computer Center (TLCc) for more information and to schedule an appointment with a tutor.

Long Term Tutoring

The Adult Literacy Movement of Albuquerque (ALMA) offers long-term (six months to one year) individual tutoring for ABE students needing a tutor for longer than a semester. You will be matched with a volunteer tutor from the community. Keep in mind that finding a tutor match can take one to two months.
